The Home of a Prop-Stylist

Prop stylist Lauren Shields has worked with the magazines Better Homes and Gardens, Lands End and Martha Stewart, just to name a few. Her Brooklyn home was featured on Design*Sponge and is surrounded with things she loves and finds inspiring.

"The wall color is Benjamin Moore Palladium Blue."

"The bed is Crate and Barrel with John Robshaw bedding. I repainted the nightstand and Ikea wall-mount lamps. The silhouette is of my father when he was nine years old, and the double curtains are handmade by me. The rug is Ikea and the chair is Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, which I found on Craigslist."

"I found these tealight holders about 12 years ago in Amsterdam and have never seen anything like them again."

"I painted a giant chalkboard on the wall and then framed it in painted wood molding and a tray to mimic an old-school chalkboard. The rug is from the ABC Carpet & Home basement remnant warehouse."

"I have thousands of pieces of fabric, and instead of having them in a box, I took my favorite ones and stretched them over embroidery hoops in my craft room."

"The green and white rug is from the ABC Carpet remnant basement (my favorite place in New York City!), and the black and white Moroccan pouf was carried back by my paternal grandmother from Morocco on her solo travels around the world when she was 65 years old. It was given to my father, who handed it down to me a few years ago. It’s one of my favorite things I own. The white bench/coffee table was found on the street. The sofa is the Crate and Barrel Petrie sofa. Pillows are John Robshaw and handmade. The “art” above the sofa is just a holding place for a project I haven’t gotten around to yet; it is just a cheap piece of fabric stretched around foam core. The nesting glass side tables are Ikea."

Sneak Peak at Lauren Conrad's Latest Lookbook

This wouldn't be Lauren Conrad's first time hearing this, but that girl has come a long way since her Mtv days. She's officially branded herself permanent as a style entrepreneur, and her latest lookbook for her Paper Crown chalks another point for her in the fashion world.

Love Ever After: New York Couples After 50 Years

This photo series by Lauren Fleishman did a photo series on New York couples who have been together at least 50 years.

“I wonder what life would be like if he wasn’t here. I don’t worry so much about me not being here. I tease him all the time. I say, ‘If I am not here, you better find someone to take care of you!’ Then I tell myself, ‘Get those fears out of your head.’ It’s going to happen, and whether it’s me or him, that is all ordained.”

Summer Days

"Make the choice to do something that makes you happy every single day. It doesn't make you a selfish person."

Following this advice by enjoying margaritas poolside with some of my favorite people. Enjoy the weather today!

Happy (Late!) National Donut Day

Let's pretend this was posted yesterday when it actually was National Donut Day. And then you can celebrate. By making these. And be really happy. Sounds like a plan.

Easy Raised Donuts

from the book Sinister Sprinkles

2 pkg fast raising yeast
2 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 cup water
1 egg beaten
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
3-4 cups flour

In a bowl mix the yeast, sugar and water. Let sit for five minutes for the yeast to activate. Add the egg, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt and mix well. Slowly add in the flour until it's not sticky to the touch. Knead the dough for a couple of minutes. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and cut out donut shapes and lay them on a baking sheet to raise for 30 minutes. Fry in canola oil at 360 F turing once so both sides cook evenly. Drain on a paper towel.
Since these donuts are the light and airy sort I added a strawberry glaze to mine which consisted of icing sugar, vanilla, warm water and strawberry flavor. Once the donuts cooled I dipped the tops in the the glaze and added my choice of topping. Sprinkles, coconut or even crushed up nuts would be great!
